How to Tell What Type of Wood a Pallet Is Made Of

Wood pallets rarely come with a label that says “oak,” “pine,” or “poplar.” In many cases, especially with recycled pallets, several wood species may even be used in the same pallet.

Still, you can usually narrow down the wood type by combining four kinds of evidence: the pallet stamp, end-grain structure, physical characteristics, and signs of previous use.

The key is not to rely on one clue alone. A heavy board is not automatically oak, and a light-colored board is not automatically pine. Start with the markings, then examine the wood itself.

Read the IPPC Stamp, Treatment Code, and Country Mark First

Before identifying the species, look for an IPPC mark on the pallet’s blocks, stringers, or deck boards.

For wood packaging entering the United States, USDA APHIS requires applicable solid-wood packaging material to be debarked, appropriately treated, and marked according to ISPM 15. A compliant mark normally includes the IPPC symbol, a two-letter country code, a producer or treatment-provider identification number, and a treatment code.

A mark might look generally like:

IPPC | US-12345 HT

Common information includes:

  • US, CN, CA, MX: country where the certified wood packaging material was produced or treated, such as the United States, China, Canada, or Mexico.
  • HT: heat treated. In the U.S. program, heat-treated wood packaging must reach a minimum wood-core temperature of 56°C (133°F) for at least 30 minutes.
  • MB: treated by methyl bromide fumigation.
  • DB: debarked. DB describes removal of bark rather than being an alternative fumigation treatment.

For a pallet intended for a home woodworking project, an HT-marked pallet is generally preferable to an MB-marked pallet because heat treatment does not rely on methyl bromide fumigation. However, an HT mark is a phytosanitary mark—not a food-contact or cleanliness certificate. It does not tell you what chemicals, oils, foods, or other cargo may have contacted the pallet later in its life.

Likewise, a pallet without an IPPC stamp is not automatically dangerous. Domestic pallets may not require an international ISPM 15 mark. However, an unmarked pallet gives you less information about its treatment and origin.

One more important point: the country code does not tell you the tree species. A CN-marked pallet, for example, was certified in China, but its individual boards still need to be examined if you want to identify the wood.

Separate Hardwood from Softwood by End Grain, Pores, and Grain Pattern

Once you have checked the stamp, examine the end grain of a deck board or stringer.

End grain is often more useful than surface color because it exposes the internal structure of the wood.

Use a magnifying glass or the zoom function on a phone camera. If necessary, lightly clean or sand a small existing end surface so the grain is easier to see.

Look for visible pores

Most hardwoods contain vessels that appear as small pores or openings when viewed from the end.

Oak is one of the easiest examples. Many oak species have relatively obvious bands of larger earlywood pores followed by smaller pores. This structure is called ring-porous wood.

Other hardwoods have pores distributed more evenly through the growth ring. These are known as diffuse-porous woods.

Poplar, maple, and several other pallet hardwoods can have finer pores that are considerably harder to see without magnification.

Softwoods such as pine, spruce, and fir do not have the vessel pores typical of hardwoods. Instead, their end grain often shows stronger differences between lighter earlywood and darker latewood.

Some softwoods, particularly pines, may also show resin-related features.

This makes a useful first test:

Visible vessel pores → probably hardwood

No vessel pores + strong earlywood/latewood bands → probably softwood

Do not confuse the terms “hardwood” and “softwood” with actual hardness. The terms refer to botanical groups. Some hardwood species can be relatively light and soft, while some softwoods can be surprisingly strong.

USDA Forest Products Laboratory research lists numerous hardwoods and softwoods used in pallet manufacturing, including oak, maple, yellow poplar, cottonwood, Douglas-fir, southern pine, spruce, and fir.

Therefore, identifying the broad wood group is usually easier than identifying an exact species.

Use Hands-On Tests and Observable Clues to Narrow Down the Species

After examining the grain, use several physical tests together.

Weight and density

Pick up a loose board or compare similar-sized pallet components.

Oak and other dense hardwoods often feel noticeably heavier than pine, spruce, poplar, or similar low-density species. Hardwood pallets designed for repeated heavy loads may therefore feel substantially heavier than lightweight softwood pallets.

But moisture changes weight dramatically. A freshly exposed or wet pine board can weigh more than an old, dry hardwood board, so weight should only support other evidence.

Fingernail or indentation test

On an inconspicuous area, press firmly with your fingernail.

A visible indentation suggests a relatively soft wood. Pine, spruce, fir, and some lower-density hardwoods may dent comparatively easily.

Dense oak or hard maple usually resists this test more strongly.

If the pallet does not belong to you, do not use a knife or other destructive test.

Grain pattern

Oak frequently has strong grain and, on certain faces, visible ray patterns.

Pine commonly displays strong growth-ring contrast, particularly on flatsawn boards.

Poplar is often relatively plain-grained, while maple tends to have a tighter, finer texture.

These are tendencies rather than guarantees, especially after years of weathering.

Smell and resin

Freshly cutting or sanding certain softwoods can provide another clue.

Pine may produce a recognizable resinous smell, and resin pockets can sometimes leave sticky material on the surface. If a board simultaneously has no visible hardwood pores, has distinct growth rings, smells resinous when freshly exposed, and releases sticky resin, the evidence strongly points toward a resinous softwood such as pine.

Spruce and fir are generally less resinous in appearance than many pines.

Never deliberately smell a pallet that has chemical staining or an unknown odor.

Water absorption

A drop of water on unfinished wood can reveal differences in porosity and surface condition, but it is not a reliable species test by itself.

Water may soak quickly into rough, dry, weathered wood and remain longer on smoother or denser surfaces. Previous coatings, contamination, moisture content, and sanding can completely change the result.

Use absorption only as supporting evidence.

Color

Color can help, but it should be one of your weakest clues.

New pine may appear pale yellow or cream. Poplar may be light cream, grayish, or slightly green. Oak often develops tan-to-brown tones.

After months or years outdoors, however, almost all pallet woods can become gray.

Heat, dirt, oxidation, UV exposure, moisture, and cargo contamination also change wood color.

Consider where the pallet came from

Domestic U.S. pallets commonly contain species or species groups such as oak, southern yellow pine, maple, spruce-pine-fir, poplar, and other locally available commercial lumber.

One USDA study of used pallet components found oak to be particularly prominent, while southern yellow pine, maple, and spruce were also represented.

Imported pallets broaden the possibilities. Depending on their origin, they may contain species such as rubberwood, plantation pine, spruce, poplar, or other locally economical timbers.

Consequently, a combination such as country mark + end grain + density + smell + grain pattern is far more useful than any single test.

Assess Recycled Grade, Repair Status, and Surface Contamination Risk Before Reuse

Knowing the species does not answer another important question:

Is this pallet actually suitable for reuse?

Many pallets in U.S. distribution networks are repaired and reused multiple times.

Look for replacement deck boards that differ sharply in color, grain, thickness, or age from neighboring boards. Extra nails, companion stringers, repaired blocks, plugged areas, and mixed new and old wood can all indicate previous repair.

APHIS itself lists a mixture of new and old wood among the characteristics inspectors may encounter when examining wood packaging material.

That means one pallet may not even have one answer to the question “What wood is this?” Its original stringers might be oak while replacement deck boards are pine or another locally available species.

More importantly, inspect the pallet for contamination.

Avoid reuse when you find:

  • Unexplained oily or greasy patches
  • Strong chemical or solvent odors
  • Unknown liquid residues
  • Extensive mold growth
  • Evidence of insect activity
  • Heavy food or biological contamination
  • Powder, crystals, or residues of unknown origin
  • Severely rotten or structurally damaged wood

Blue or gray discoloration can sometimes be associated with staining fungi rather than structural decay, so color alone does not prove the pallet is unsafe. However, when the history of a pallet is unknown, suspicious staining combined with moisture, odor, visible growth, or contamination is a good reason not to bring it indoors.

Also remember that an HT stamp does not erase the pallet’s history. Heat treatment is performed to control wood pests. A pallet may have been heat treated when manufactured and later used to transport agricultural chemicals, industrial liquids, food products, or other materials.

For indoor furniture, children’s projects, kitchen projects, gardening containers for edible crops, or applications involving food, use wood with a known and trustworthy history whenever possible.

A Four-Step Pallet Wood Identification Checklist

The next time you find an unknown pallet, use this order:

1. Stamp: Check the IPPC mark, country code, producer number, and HT or MB treatment code.

2. End grain: Look for hardwood pores or the pore-free growth-ring structure typical of softwoods.

3. Physical clues: Compare density, indentation resistance, grain, smell, resin, and surface texture.

4. Condition: Check repairs, stains, odors, mold, residues, moisture damage, and previous-use clues.

Do not try to identify pallet wood from color or weight alone. Combining several observations can often narrow the answer from “unknown pallet wood” to hardwood versus softwood and, in favorable cases, to a likely species such as oak, pine, spruce, or poplar.

When treatment history or contamination remains uncertain, choosing a new or traceable pallet is the safer option.
